FAQs

How can I generate FCC Part 22.537 and Part 22.567 contours using TAP?

TAP customers who have purchased the Carey module can generate FCC Part 22.537 and Part 22.567 contours.  Create a new coverage study and give the study a unique description. It is recommended to identify, at a minimum, whether it is a service contour or an interfering contour within the study description. Select the Fixed Facility for which you are interested in generating a contour.  No Mobile Facility information is used when generating a Part 22 contour, so any Mobile Facility may be selected. Under the Coverage Area section, select Contour Study and set the number of azimuths you wish to run.  This section of the Carey module does a direct calculation of distance (similar to the Broadcast module calculation), so the values for radial distance, radial step, and contour percentage will all be ignored, and can be set however the user wishes.

Under Propagation Model, select Carey – FCC Part 22.537/22.567 (R&O 94-201), then select the type of contour you wish to run from the dropdown menu.

There are seven options for Part 22 Contours.  For each of the contour calculation options, the contour distance is calculated separately along each radial.
d is the radial distance in kilometers
h is the radial Height Above Average Terrain (HAAT) in meters
p is the radial Effective Radiated Power (ERP) in Watts
When h is less than 30 meters, h is set to 30 meters in the calculation.  Also, p is not allowed to be less than 0.1 Watt or 27 dB down from the maximum ERP in any direction, whichever is greater.  The radial distance calculations are as follows:

VHF Paging Station Service Contour (Part 22.537(c)):
d = 1.234 x h0.40 x p0.20

VHF Paging Interfering Contour (Part 22.537(d)):
d = 6.509 x h0.28 x p0.17

VHF Base Station Service Contour (Part 22.567(c)):
d = 1.609 x h0.40 x p0.20

VHF Base/Fixed Station Interfering Contour (Part 22.567(d)):
d = 8.577 x h0.24 x p0.19, when h < 150 meters
d = 12.306 x h0.23 x p0.14, when h >= 150 meters

UHF Service Contour (Part 22.567(e)):
d = 1.726 x h0.35 x p0.18

UHF Interfering Contour (Part 22.567(f)):
d = 9.471 x h0.23 x p0.15, when h < 150 meters
d = 6.336 x h0.31 x p0.15, when h >= 150 meters

Interfering Contour to BETRS Central Office Station (Part 22.567(g)):
d = 36.364 x h0.2 x p0.1

For determining the service or interfering radial for 931 MHz paging channels, antenna HAAT may be found using the HAAT calculation utility, and this value may be entered in to the look-up tables E-1 and E-2 in Part 22.537.
