Range Circles in HDMapper™
SoftWright Home

Q:  How can I add circles to the map around my transmitter site to show distance?

A:  With TAP6.0.2467 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of August 31, 2012, or later, you can add range circles for coverage layers in HDMapper.

Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only.  You should determine appropriate settings for your application.

After you have computed an area coverage study (Tile, Radial, Contour, or Target Points) with HDCoverage you can display the coverage map in HDMapper:

Right-click the coverage layer legend entry to display the popup menu:

Select “Draw Distance Ranges” in the popup menu:

A dialog box will be displayed for setting the range and increment of the circles around the transmitter site:

Set the range (the maximum distance) for the circles, and the step (the increment for the circles out from the site).  Then click the Draw button:

The range circles will be added to the map:

Because HDMapper uses decimal degrees of latitude and longitude for the horizontal units the range circles will appear as ellipses.  If the coverage layer is displayed with the range circles in other software that uses different map projections (such as Google Earth described below) the range circles will appear circular.

To remove the circles, right-click the coverage layer legend and click the Draw Distance Ranges item to un-check it.

If the range circles are displayed they will be included if you export the map to Google Earth:

You can also display the transmitter site from the popup menu by clicking the Show TX Site item:

The transmitter site is displayed.  You can change the symbol used for the transmitter site.
