Managing Multiple Coverages in HDMapper™

Q:  How can I show multiple coverages in HDMapper and control which coverage parameters are included when I print the coverage map?

A:  With TAP6.0.2361 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of October 31, 2010, or later, you can select which coverage parameters are printed and for which coverages.  You can also identify which coverages correspond to which legend entries and other functions to facilitate multiple coverages in HDMapper.

Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only.  You should determine appropriate settings for your application.

Several functions are useful when working with multiple coverages:

·  Showing all coverages

·  Identifying coverages

·  Identifying transmitter site locations

·  Selecting coverage for printing parameters

·  Selecting coverage parameters to print

For example, suppose you have used HDCoverage to compute a service contour and five potential interfering contours.  You have plotted the service contour and added map layers for the interferers into a single HDMapper instance:

Show All Coverage Layers

After working with the map, zooming in to view a particular coverage area, etc., it may be helpful to restore the map to a view which shows all coverages.

The “Zoom to extent of all coverage layers” button restores the view:

Identifying coverages

With multiple coverages there may be confusion about which coverage shown on the map corresponds to which legend entry.  You cannot easily use the Mouse Tips function or the Identify function, since those functions only work on the active layer.  However, you can hold the Shift key on your keyboard while you click a legend entry, the layer corresponding to the legend entry will flash several times on the drawing.

Identifying transmitter site locations

You can also locate the transmitter site associated with the coverage by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the legend entry.

You can also mark transmitter sites as desired by right-clicking on the legend entry and selecting the “Show TX Site” option:

Selecting coverage for printing parameters

When you print the map from HDMapper you have the option of including the descriptive parameters used for computing the coverages.  If you have a map with numerous coverages you can select which of the coverages will have their parameters printed.

For example, right click on a layer for one of the coverages, and click the “Print Coverage Task Specs” item (if the item is already marked with a checkmark, clicking the item will remove the mark).

For layers that are not required to print the coverage specifications, be sure the “Print Coverage Task Specs” is not checked.

Now when you use the Print Preview function, only the parameters for the selected coverage layers will be included:

Selecting coverage parameters to print

You may also select which sections of the coverage parameters you want to include on the printed map.  The parameters used to compute a coverage study can be displayed from the TAP menu in the “Recent Coverage Studies” section by right-clicking the study in the list:

The parameters will be displayed in several categories:

The general description of the study, as well as each of the categories can be selected in HDMapper for inclusion on the printed map.

From the HDMapper menu, click the Configuration menu, then select “Map Print Objects”:

For example, suppose you wanted only to include the Task Description, the Fixed Facility information, and the Propagation model parameters.  Select only the desired items and click the Continue button.

Only the selected parameters, for the selected coverage will be included on the printed map:

Also note that each of the parameter sections is a separate text box, so the sections can be relocated on the Print Preview form:

The labels can be formatted and positioned, and the layout saved as a Print Preview Template for future use.
