Multiple Coverages on HDMapper™

Q:  How do I show the results of multiple coverage studies on HDMapper?

A:  Since all information in HDMapper consists of shapefile layers you can add coverage layers computed with TAP just like any other layer.

Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only.  You should determine appropriate settings for your application.

(This article describes an older method for adding a coverage layer.  A more recent feature, the Add Coverage Layer button, may be more useful.)

The process of adding layers in HDMapper is discussed in Adding Layers to HDMapper.

The shapefiles containing TAP5 coverage calculations are written into folders under the MAPPING\MAP FILES folder in the folder where TAP is installed, such as SWTAP\MAPPING\MAP FILES.  The folder name for each study is based on the description assigned when the study was set up in TAP.  (Illegal file name characters in the description will be changed to the underscore “_” character in order to create the folder names.)

For example, suppose you have a map showing a coverage study:

To add another layer, click the Add Layer button:

Use the “Layer to Add” dialog box to navigate to the correct folder for the coverage study you want to add:

Open the folder and select the shapefile.  In some folders there may be multiple coverage shapefiles associated with the task, such as a talkback calculation.

When you open the file, the coverage shapefile will be added to the map:

New layers are normally added on the top layer of the drawing.  You may need to adjust the layer order by dragging the layer in the legend to the desired position.

By default all coverage layers are shown with the same settings for signal levels and colors.  If desired you can set separate values for the separate coverages:

You can add more layers, including other types of coverage studies, such as contours:

If you add a contour coverage study you may need to edit the legend settings to change to a transparent fill:
