Population Counts in Maptitude

Q: How can I use Maptitude to get a population estimate for a coverage contour computed in TAP?

A: After you have computed a coverage contour in TAP, exported the contour to a BNA file, and imported the file to Maptitude, the following steps are used to get the population estimate:

  1. Be sure you have imported the BNA file as a layer and it is displayed on the Maptitude map.
  2. Add the layer CCTRACT.CDF from the data supplied with Maptitude.
  3. Select the BNA Contour layer as the working layer on the map.
  4. From the Maptitude Tools menu, select Overlay.
  5. For the Overlay, select All Features.
  6. For the Layer, select Census Tract (if this option is not displayed in the pulldown list, be sure you have added the CCTRACT.CDF file as a layer).
  7. For Include, select All Features.
  8. Click the Attributes button on the Overlay form.
  9. Several status forms will be displayed.
  10. On the Overlay Attributes form, click the Clear button.
  11. In the Fields list, select Population.
  12. In the Options section, check the Add checkbox.
  13. Click OK to close the Overlay Attributes form.
  14. Click OK to close the Overlay form.
  15. Enter a file name to save the population information. As before, this can be the same file name as the original contour BNA file, but with the .BIN extent. Click the Save button.
  16. Several status forms will be displayed.
  17. A form will be displayed showing the computed area of the contour, the contour description (from the BNA file) and the population estimate. You may need to scroll to the right to see the population column.
