Drawing a Path by Azimuth and Distance

Q:  I need to look at a path from my site on an azimuth of interest but I don’t have coordinates for the receiver end-point.  How can I do this in HDPath?

A:  With TAP6.0.2141 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of January 31, 2007, or later, you can use the Azimuth and Distance button.  The program will compute the end point coordinates and draw the path profile.

When you have the base station selected in the Fixed Facility – Transmit record on the left side of HDPath, click the “Azimuth and Distance” button on the toolbar near the top of the form:

You will be prompted to enter the Azimuth value (in degrees from True North):

Then you will be prompted for the distance for the path. (The distance units will be the same as the currently selected units for the path in the “Units” section of the “Path Parameters” below the profile graphic.)

The coordinates will be computed for that azimuth and distance from the transmitter site, and the path profile will be plotted:

Since these coordinates represent a location that is not necessarily in the Fixed Facility database, the Fixed Facility – Receiver interface is disconnected from the database.  The Description field is written as the azimuth and distance from the Transmit site, and the computed coordinates are displayed.

To reconnect to the Fixed Facility database, click the Connect button near the upper right corner of the Fixed Facility – Receiver interface with the red line indicating the interface is disconnected.  When the interface is connected to the database, the line is green.

If you want to save the new coordinates to the Fixed Facility database for future use, change any of the information in the display.  Changing the values will cause the program to prompt you with the option to save the values to a new record:

If you click Yes, the coordinates will be saved to a new record.  You will need to edit the record if you want to add other Fixed Facility information, such as antenna height, etc., at that location.
