Alternative Population Count Data Fields

Q:  How can I use the TAP Population Count function to count households or other data values?

A:  With TAP6.0.2435 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of February 29, 2012, or later, you can select different data fields to include in a population count.

Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only.  You should determine appropriate settings for your application.

The TAP Population Count function in HDMapper uses data in point object shapefiles.  Each point typically represents a population count referenced to that location, such as a particular city block.  The Pop Count function can use coverage information computed by TAP, such as a Tile or Contour study, and report the total population for a given criterion, such as the population in all the areas with a specified value of signal strength.

The original Pop Count function uses a data field named “POP100” as the field to be counted.  (The TAP Data Summation function can use other data fields, but is more complicated than the Pop Count function.)  The new function described in this article provides the ability to specify other data file fields that can also be used, such as the number of households in a location.

Updated population count data files available from other sources may use different field names.  Consult with the source of the point shapefile data you are using for the definition of each data field in the file.

For example, suppose you have a TAP contour study plotted in HDMapper.

You can add a population shapefile layer that includes households as point locations:

If the data column (or data “field”) that contains the household data in the shapefile database is named “HHD” you can add that field name as one of the population count field names TAP will recognize.

In the HDMapper menu, click the Configuration menu, then click “POP Fields”

In the comma-separated list, be sure that the desired field name (HHD in this example) is included in the list.  The defaults for TAP 6.0.2435 are shown below:

Click OK to close the form and save the data field names.

Now you can click the Pop Count button.

The household (HHD) field is now included and can be selected as the source of the population count data for the study.
