Path Profiles from Link Route Maps
SoftWright Home

Q:  How can I draw a path profile for a link route I draw in HDMapper?

A:  With TAP6.0.2423 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of November 30, 2011, or later, you can use the information function in HDMapper to draw a link route in HDPath.

Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only.  You should determine appropriate settings for your application.

Earlier releases of TAP enabled link routes to be drawn in HDMapper.  The release described in this article adds new enhancements:

·   You can now use the HDMapper “ID Button” to select a route map drawn on a map to see the path profile for that route.

·   You can now create new link routes using a simplified method of selecting the end points of the link.

·   You can create link routes from HDPath that can be displayed in HDMapper.

Displaying Link Route Profiles

For example, suppose you have a link route drawn in HDMapper, as described in the HDMapper Route Maps article.  (Note that link routes created with previous versions do not support the ability to draw the profile as described in this section.)

Be sure the link route layer is selected as the active layer (click on the legend entry), then click the “Information” button on the HDMapper toolbar.

Click the link route line on the map:

When the Map Information form is displayed, click the Draw button:

HDPath will be launched and the profile drawn for the link route path.

Creating Link Routes in HDMapper

You can add link routes from HDMapper.  Click the “Path Routes” button in HDMapper:

Enter a file name to create, or select an existing Link Route shapefile.  (The default location for link route shapefiles is the SHAPEFILES\LINK ROUTE FILES folder where TAP is installed:

On the “Paths to Write to Shapefile” form, click the Add button:

As with previous versions you can enter site information manually, or you can use the Fixed Facility Lookup buttons.  With TAP6.0.2423 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of November 30, 2011, or later, you can also use the simplified approach of selecting the facilities in the check-box lists on the form.

As with earlier versions, enter a description of the path near the bottom of the form.

Note that only paths using Fixed Facility records for both end points support the function to draw the path profile.  Link routes based on one or two manually entered facilities can be drawn in HDMapper, but the profile cannot be drawn with the Identification button as describe above.

Creating Link Routes in HDPath

You can also create a link route directly from a profile in HDPath. In HDPath, click the “Save path as link route” button:

Enter a description for the route:

Select an existing link route file, or enter a new name to create a new file and click the Save button.

The path will be saved as a link route that can be drawn in HDMapper.
