BMP Viewer

Q:  When I create a bitmap from HDMapper, how do I find the latitude and longitude extents of the image?

A:  TAP 5.0.1057 or later systems include BMPViewer for displaying bitmap files.

This article describes an older version of the SoftWright Image Viewer program.  Click here for update information.

Using HDMapper with a Maintenance Subscription date of April 30, 2005, or later, the program also exports the .BPW "world file."   The world file contains georeference information so the BMP file can be used in compatible mapping software that supports that format.  Any georeferenced .BMP file (that is accompanied by the .BPW file) can be used with BMPViewer.  Likewise, the .BMP and .BPW files exported by HDMapper can be used with any software that supports the georeferenced bitmap format.

From the folder where TAP is installed, execute the file SWBMPViewer.exe.  When the form is displayed, click the Browse button (“…”) to select the file to open:

The file selection dialog box is displayed:

When you select the file you want, it will be displayed in BMPViewer:

If the .BPW world file exists, the latitude and longitude limits of the file are displayed at the bottom of the map.

Also, if the world file exists, as you move the mouse on the map, the approximate mouse location coordinates are displayed.  If you click the map, the coordinates of the location you clicked are copied to the Windows clipboard and can be pasted into other documents.
