USGS Digital Line Graph Sources

Q: How can I find USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) files for my area for use with TAP?

A: The source of the files that TAP can use is described in our FAQ at:

http://www.softwright.com/faq\support\Using%20DLG%20Files%20in%20TAP_%204.2.html

To get road files for Detroit (as an example):

Go to the USGS web page at:

http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/Webglis/ftpdlg100k.html

There are options for finding the files you want by USGS map name or by state.  Click the "By State Name" link.

Click the "Michigan" link.

http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/glis/hyper/guide/100kdlgfig/states/MI.html

Click the "Detroit East" link.

http://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/DLG/100K/D/detroit-e_MI/

Click the "Transportation" link.

A number of files are listed. These are usually smaller map areas. Be sure to select the OPT (optional) format files, not the SDTS files.  You can download several of the files and unzip them. By plotting the individual files you can determine exactly where they are in the "Detroit - East" area. You can then rename the files with a more descriptive name (instead of "454734.RD.OPT").
