Q: How can I get elevations for a list of site locations?
A: With TAP6.0.2423 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of November 30, 2011, or later, you can use a text or comma-delimited file of coordinate locations to find the elevations of each location.
Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only. You should determine appropriate settings for your application.
From the TAP “Map” menu select the “Point Elevation” item:
Set up the Interpolation method, topographic data formats to use, and the desired units as usual with the Point Elevation function:
To load site coordinates from a file, click the “Points from File” menu or toolbar button:
Select the file you want to use:
The file is a comma-delimited text file. The contents of the file are as follows:
Any line beginning with a semi-colon is considered a comment and is ignored.
Coordinate values on each line are latitude first, then longitude.
Coordinate values should be enclosed in double-quotation marks. This enables the coordinate values to be either in decimal degrees or in degree-minute-second format. For decimal degree values, southern latitudes and western longitudes should be negative values. Degree-minute-second values should include a direction value, N or S for latitude, E or W for longitude.
Each line can include an optional description
When the file is loaded, the results will be computed and displayed in the list on the Point Elevation form.
The list will include any comments in the file, and an “EOF” line to indicate the end of the file was reached.
The coordinates shown for each site in the list are in the user-selected format from the TAP “Units” menu.
To change the default coordinate format, click the “Configuration” menu in TAP and select “Units:”
Use the pull-down list in the “Coordinate Format” section to select the format you want:
