SRTM Data

Q: What is SRTM data?

A: SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data is distributed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under a joint project with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The Space Shuttle Endeavour mission in February of 2000 collected data over 80% of the Earth’s land surface. The data includes most of the area between 60° N and 56° S latitude.

The topographic elevation data is processed to create files covering 1° x1° areas. Data resolution outside the United States and its territories is 3-arcseconds (approximately 90 meters). Data resolution in the United States is 1-arcsecond (approximately 30 meters).

SoftWright’s Terrain Analysis Package (TAP)Ô software, Version 4.5 and later, can read the SRTM data files and use the elevation information for path profiles, radio communication coverage plots, area elevation grid files, etc.

The data is now available from SoftWright for most of the world  For more detail check out this page.
