Update Installation

Q: After a computer crash I installed the UPDATE.EXE file from the SoftWright web site. Why am I getting errors about components not correctly registered and other problems?

A: The update by itself does not have all the components you need to run TAP, just things that have changed. That's why you need to install the complete version first.

You can install the complete TAP system either from a CD from us or from a complete download from our web site. Then run the update file (the one you just downloaded) to be sure you have the latest maintenance release (or "build") of TAP.

If you want to install from a CD you already have, be sure the label on the CD shows a version of at least 4.xx.251 or later. If your CD is earlier than this build you will need to get a more recent CD to install from.

If you want a new CD mailed to you, please email to our office to request a current CD.

You can download the complete CD to install (a little over 100Mb).

The file can be downloaded, then executed. It is a self-extracting installation program.

If you install the software on a machine that has your older version of TAP installed, be sure to install the new software in the same folder (typically C:\SWTAP). Installing a new copy of the software in a different folder (resulting in two copies on the same machine) will confuse the Windows Registry and cause problems later running the software.

When the software is first installed from the CD on a new system, the license file (SWCONFIG.DTA) installed is the demo file. You can copy the file from your floppy disk labeled "User License Configuration File", or from the old TAP installation to overwrite that file and put TAP into the normal licensed mode.

If you don't have the floppy disk or can't find the file, please let us know and we can email a new one to you.

If you are moving to a new machine, there are a couple of other issues to consider, mainly about preserving any database information (such as Fixed Facility specs) or work product (such as coverage studies). These issues are discussed in an FAQ about moving TAP.
