TAP Installation and Updates

Q: I have a couple of CDs from SoftWright, plus update files or patches I have downloaded from your web site. Which ones do I need to install?

A: The Maintenance Release files from our web site are complete updates, so you don't need to worry about keeping track of the intermediate steps.

You can download the latest Maintenance Release file from our web site.

http://www.softwright.com

The link is near the bottom of the page, so you may need to scroll down to find it. The text is

"The latest TAP maintenance release is --- posted on --/--/2002"

Download the file (UPDATE.EXE) and run it to install the new software into the same folder where TAP is already installed, usually the \SWTAP folder.

These get updated occasionally so you might want to check once a month or so. These are typically small enhancements to the software or corrections to any problems we find.

This UPDATE file should only be used to update a current installation of TAP. If you are moving TAP to a different machine, or installing on your notebook (which is permitted under our license agreement) you need to first perform the complete installation, either from a recent SoftWright TAP CD or from the file on our web site (a little over 100Mb):

ftp://ftp.softwright.com/pub/CD_DEMO.EXE

The file can be downloaded, then executed. It is a self-extracting installation program.

You should have a file named SWCONFIG.DTA, probably on a floppy disk labeled "User License Configuration File", or in the folder where you previously had TAP installed.

When the software is first installed from the CD on a new system, the license file (SWCONFIG.DTA) installed is the demo file. You can copy the file from your floppy disk or old TAP installation to overwrite that file and put TAP into the normal licensed mode.

If you don't have the floppy disk or can't find the file, please let us know and we can email a new one to you.

If you are moving to a new machine, there are a couple of other issues to consider, mainly about preserving any database information (such as Fixed Facility specs) or work product (such as coverage studies). These issues are discussed in an FAQ at:

http://www.softwright.com/faq\support\moving_tap.html

If you are not sure of the sequence of the complete vs. the update files on your computer, you can install the complete over the existing installation of TAP. Be sure to specify the same folder where TAP is installed. That way any missing components will get installed. Then you can run the UPDATE.EXE program to be sure you have the latest maintenance release.
