Moving TAP Work Product Files

SoftWright Home

Q:  How can I move my coverage studies, coverage maps,  intermod studies, etc., from my old computer to a new machine?

A:  TAP6.0.2355 or later and a Maintenance Subscription date of September 30, 2010, or later, you can use a utility to modify the path names embedded in some TAP files to match the new system.

********** Note that this article references a legacy TAP Move utility that has since been superseded by the Merge utility.  SoftWright recommends, where feasible, using Merge to import work product into TAP from another installation. **********

Note that all values in this example are for demonstration purposes only.  You should determine appropriate settings for your application.

Please read through this article completely before attempting to move your TAP system.  If you have any questions or need help with this process, please email to SoftWright Support.

The procedure described in this article assumes the TAP installation on the new machine is a new installation, and that no area studies or coverage maps have been computed on the new system.  If this is not the case, previous studies on the new machine may be over-written when files from the old machine are transferred.

First install the latest version of TAP on the new machine, and move the work files from the old machine to the new machine, carefully following the instructions in the article on “Moving TAP.”  As explained in that article, be sure NOT to copy application files (.exe, .ocx, .dll, etc.) from the old system to the new system.

After the files have been copied to the new machine, look in the “FileScript” folder where TAP is installed on the new machine and DELETE the following files:

            Delete SWSrcIdx.dbf

            Delete SWScript.dbf

Look in the “SYSTEM” folder and DELETE the following files:

            Delete SWMaps.dbf

            Delete SWPaths.dbf

These files will be re-created automatically when TAP is started later in this process.

From the folder where TAP is installed, double-click the application file SWChangeTaskRoot.exe

(If you have an earlier version of TAP you can download the application into the folder where TAP is installed.)

On the “TAP Reference Folder” form, click the Browse button (“…”)

Select the folder where the Task files are located, typically the WORK folder where TAP is installed:

In the “File Types to Search” section, select the .INI option.

Click the “Start” button on the form.  The program will search the files to try to determine the folder where TAP was installed on the old machine.  The results, along with the folder where TAP is installed on the new machine, are displayed:

Click the Yes button to update the Task files to include the correct references to paths on the new machine.

Depending on the number of Tasks being moved to the new machine this process may take several minutes.  When complete, a message will be displayed.

Next, browse to the folder for mapping files, typically the MAPPING folder where TAP is installed, and select the .SMF extent (SoftWright Mapping File) for the file type.

Click the Start button and the program will update the mapping files for the folders on the new TAP installation.

Close the “TAP Reference Folder” form and start your TAP software.  A dialog box will be displayed to enable you to create a new topographic data file index.  Click the Yes button:

The TAP menu will start and you should have access to the coverage studies and maps computed on the old system and now moved to the new TAP system.
