Creating Land Use Data Files

Q: I need to use the Land Use module in an area where no USGS Land Use Land Cover data files area available. Can I create my own?

A: You can create Land Use data from the Land Use Editor.

From the Editors menu in TAP, select Land Use Data, then click on the "Edit Land Use Files" item:

The Land Use Editor form will be displayed.

Click on the New File button on the form:

When the Create Land Use File form is displayed, enter the coordinates of the area where you want to create a file.

The Land Use files cover one square degree areas, so you can enter any coordinates in the degree block for the file you want to create. The file name will indicate the south east corner coordinates of the file.

You can also select one of the USGS Land Use classifications to use as the value to assign to all the locations in the file when it is created. If you do not want to assign a value to all the locations, select "Undefined".

You must also enter the Target Path where you want to file to be written. (If this is not one of the paths in the Land Use configuration list, you will later need either to move the file to one of the folders in the list, or you can add the new folder to the list. The file must be in one of the folders in the Land Use configuration list in order for other TAP programs to find and use the file.)

When the coordinates, target path, and default filler value have been set, click the Create File button.

After the file has been created, click the Close button.

The edit the file you just created, click the Open button on the Land Use Editor form:

Since the Land Use data is based on UTM coordinates and the files are based on geodetic (latitude-longitude) coordinates, there may be areas at the edges of the file that are outside of the geographic area for the file. These will be indicated by blank, red cells in the grid of values. You can use the horizontal and vertical scroll bars to move to an area of the file containing the Land Use values. You can also enter a coordinates (in latitude and longitude, or in UTM Easting and Northing) in the blanks to the right of the grid. Then click the Go! Button to move to those coordinates in the file.
