HDPath Microwave Link Budget

Q:  How do I use HDPath™ to compute a microwave link budget?

A:  TAP systems (Version 5.0.1060 and later) with a Maintenance Subscription date of July 31, 2005 or later, and that include the Microwave Link Budget module can use HDPath to compute the path link budget.

Note that all values shown in this article are for illustration purposes only.  It is important that you use good engineering judgment to determine the values that are appropriate for your equipment and specific application.

You should start by drawing the profile between the endpoints of the path, as described in HDPath Introduction.

All microwave reliability and outage calculations are based on a clear path.  There should be no obstacles blocking the line of sight or half of the first Fresnel zone along the path.

To compute the microwave link budget for the displayed path, click the Microwave Link Budget button on the toolbar:

The Microwave Link Budget form is displayed:

You can enter or compute (with the Calc buttons) several loss and reliability factors:

Changes are computed and updated in the link budget values.  (The loss and reliability factors are discussed in more detail in the Microwave System Equations article.)

You can print the link budget with the Print menu, or you can write the information to a comma-delimited (.CSV) file that can be edited with other software, such as Microsoft Excel.
