Area Template Lookup
Q: What is the Area Template Lookup function in TAP?
A: Several TAP functions require you to define a rectangular area (for an elevation grid, tile coverage study, etc.). The Area Template Lookup enables you to create, edit, and retrieve areas that you use frequently.
Using Area Templates are a good way to standardize area grids, or to be sure you use exactly the same grid for several different studies. Instead of typing coordinates manually for multiple studies, the Area Template lets you enter and save the coordinates and other parameters one time, then use the Area Template lookup to use those coordinates in future studies.
When you click the Template button for the Area Grid, Advanced Coverage Tile study, or other TAP function, the TAP Tile Study Parameters Template form is displayed.

You can use the New button to create a new record, or the Find button to locate a record you created previously.
The fields shown on the form are described below.
- Tile Description
Enter a description of the area. This description will be used when you use the Find button to select this area in the future.
- Tile Type
Only rectangular areas are currently supported.
- Path Elevation Step
For lookups that are for a tile coverage study, this is the value of the data increment for the path data from the transmitter site to each point on the Tile study.
- NS Tile Step (etc.)
The NS and EW step values are the grid spacing for the columns and rows of locations in the area. Usually the values will be the same, but you have the option to specify different North-South and East-West grid increments.
- Northern Latitude (etc.)
The latitude and longitude limits define the extent of the rectangular area defined by the template. These can be automatically updated if you change the Central Latitude or Longitude, or the range values (as described below).
- Central Latitude (etc.)
When you enter the north, south, east, and west limits of the area, the central latitude and longitude values and the range in both directions are computed. You can specify a different central latitude and longitude value (or use the Facility or Location lookup buttons), and the latitude and longitude limits will be recomputed based on the Central coordinates and the range values.
- Facility
Click this button to select a record from the Fixed Facility database. The coordinates of the facility will be used for the Central coordinates, and the coordinate extents will be recomputed for the specified range around the Central coordinates.
- Location
Click this button to select a record from the Location database. The coordinates of the location will be used for the Central coordinates, and the coordinate extents will be recomputed for the specified range around the Central coordinates.
- NS Tile Range (etc)
The range of the area in both directions can be specified. If you enter a new range value, the coordinate extents of the area will be recomputed based on the ranges around the Central coordinates.
