Creating a Template in 3DDisplay Without an Elevation File
Q: How can I save a basic drawing settings, such as elevation colors, that I want to use several times in the TAP 3DDisplay module?
A: The Template function in 3DDisplay ("3DD") enables you to save the settings of a drawing so you can re-create those settings on another drawing by simply loading the template of your 3D image.
If you want to create a template with elevation levels and colors to use, you can create the template even without loading an elevation grid file.
As an example, click the Coloring Scheme section on the left of the 3D Display form:

Select the "Elevation Gradient" coloring scheme, and set the levels and colors you want to use:

The last step of preparation for this example is to use the "Display and Print" section to change from the "wireframe" mesh drawing to the "surface" option to better illustrate the effects of coloring and lighting:

To save the Template settings, open the File section and click the Make Template button:

Select the sections you want to save for the Template. For example, since this Template is to be independent of any particular grid file, un-check the Grid File item.

Click the OK button, and enter the name of the Template to save:

Using the Template
Once the template has been created, it can be used with an elevation grid file.
For example, load a sample file by clicking on the Select Grid File Section and clicking the Load button:

When prompted for the grid file, select the "SAMPLE Topo Data.GRD" file in the "DEMO SAMPLES" folder.

If necessary, click the Redraw button to display the elevation grid file with the initial settings.

Select the File section and click Load Template:

Select the template you want to use:

On the dialog box that is displayed, click "Yes" to clear any existing color information from the drawing:

Click the Redraw button to see the template for elevation values applied to the grid file:

Then you can use the View and other sections of the controls to change the size, orientation, and other aspects of the drawing:
